What is a Root Canal?

When a tooth is cracked, chipped, or injured, bacteria can enter the pulp and cause severe pain and discomfort. If not treated, the infection can cause irreversible damage. Root canal therapy removes infected and/or inflamed pulp inside of the tooth. A root canal is performed while you are completely numb. The procedure does not hurt, and it is completed in approximately one hour. If the infection in the tooth is severe, a second appointment may be necessary, but your pain will decrease significantly after your first appointment. After your root canal procedure, there may be some soreness that will subside within a few days. Once your root canal is over, you’ll feel relieved that your tooth was saved from an extraction.
